Like all Audio Research amplifiers, the D240 benefits from advanced design, critical selection of parts, and exacting manufacture. The input stage of the D240 uses J-FETs, while the output stage is a direct-coupled topology using Multiple-Emitter Transistors noted for both their wide-bandwidth musicality and ruggedness. Power-supply design is typical Audio Research, employing full electronic regulation, a sophisticated new power transformer design, and energy storage of 180 joules.
You will find the D240 amplifier to be eminently suitable to a wide variety of loudspeaker designs and loads, and capable of delivering highly musical results in each case. Power delivery increases substantially as speaker impedance drops, and the D240 is designed to retain its musical composure even under trying circumstances. Additionally, a sophisticated, non-fused protection network prevents damage to both amplifier and loudspeakers under unpredicted fault conditions, without sonic compromise.
In terms of connection flexibility and convenience, the 0240 also sets new standards: both XLR ("balanced") and two sets of RCA ("single-ended") inputs are provided, as well as custom gold-plated binding post outputs designed to accomodate bi-wired loudspeakers. Bridged-mono operation is also possible.
