Quad S-1 bookshelf loudspeakers trace their alluring sound to one of high-end audio's most iconic developments: the corner ribbon tweeter. Of course, owning up to 21st century needs, the true ribbon version found in S-1 ably handles the requirements of modern high-power amplifiers while also retaining the detail, accuracy, and smoothness for which Quad remains associated. And since S-1's composite ribbon sandwich substrate tweeter functions as both the diaphragm and motor system – completely unlike conventional dome units – you'll benefit from off-the-charts levels of efficiency, control, and transparency. Simply position S-1 with its tweeter at or near ear level, and you're off and running.
Indeed, one of the first things you'll notice about the two-way, rear-ported S-1 relates to just how composed, pure, finessed, and clean it plays with all types of music – characteristics that extend to its mannered ways with dynamics and low-frequency response. A sophisticated crossover network performs the virtually seamless handoff between the 1.75 x 0.5-inch tweeter and four-inch woven Kevlar midrange driver. The combination also accounts for S-1's fatigue-free presentation and ability to arrange extremely complex passages into cohesive, balanced performances.
Visually, the 11.5-pound S-1 artfully merges contemporary sleekness and traditional elegance. Graced with Italian-inspired rounded top edges at the front and rear, each S-1 cabinet arrives comprised of alternate layers of MDF and high-density particleboard with circumferential internal bracing that reduces panel resonance below the threshold of human hearing.
