The KRC-3 preamp from Krell was one of the greatest bargain in hifi when it first launched in 1996. Designed to be an “affordable” preamp for those who want to get into the Krell sound but found it too expensive, the KRC-3 was the answer. At its $3,000 MSRP, it would still be amazing value now. Ken Kessler even felt that it could be price at three, four times more and it would still be a bargain. Indeed, the KRC-3 has a lot going for it. Its pure Class A operation is a sonic gem. Music was beautifully crafted through the KRC-3. Presentation was strong, well placed and eloquent. Vocals was particularly striking and holographic. Unlike some similarly priced preamps, the soundstage seems to “shy” behind the curtains but with the KRC-3, it commandeered the center stage. At under $1,300 its a best buy at this price point.
